I work with many college and graduate students around issues related to life transitions, emerging adulthood, family conflict, academic and career stress, anxiety and depression. I work in person in Decatur, close to Emory's campus and virtually in New York, Georgia, and Maine.
Mahogany was created to increase mental health education and therapeutic engagement within communities of color using a relatable and holistic approach to healing. We specialize in helping adolescents, adults and families navigate change and transitions brought on by the effects of trauma, mental illness, counter-productive intergenerational patterns, and general life developments. Using frameworks based in Psychodynamic, Cognitive, Behavioral, Relational and Sensorimotor Therapy, clients are not only students but also teachers through the exploration of themes and patterns related to their family of origin, life experiences, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and bodily functioning. By being an active participant in treatment, our hope is that every client learns that they possess the power to understand themselves and make personal contributions to whatever positive changes it is that they desire in their lives. We pride ourselves on our mission to help strengthen communities of color through healing its members from the inside.
Life is full of constant change that we are learning how to navigate every day. Often, adjusting to these changes can bring up a range of emotions including anxiety, depression, and self-doubt. I work collaboratively with students who face a variety of challenges, including life transitions, relationship issues, and navigating queer identities. College and graduate school typically occur at pivotal developmental points for people in terms of figuring out who they are, what they want, and separating/individuating from parental figures. Together, we will work to understand your inner life, what works and what doesn't in terms of your thinking, behavior and ways of relating to others. Often, patterns develop that help us stay safe and secure when we're young, but would benefit from re-examination and modification to live a more fulfilling adult life. I have a sub-specialty working with people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a highly distressing fixation on a perceived appearance defect that can impact daily functioning and quality of life. I help you understand where the appearance fixation originated, including negative self appraisals and rituals/compulsions that accompany BDD. Learning to face feared and avoided situations is a gradual process that takes place over time, freeing you from the hold of BDD and leading to improved functioning and a more satisfying life.

The students I work best with are curious, thoughtful, and often in a period of deep self-questioning. Many are figuring out who they are, what they believe, and what kind of life they want to build. Some have experimented with psychedelics and are left with big questions afterward about meaning, identity, emotions, or reality itself. They want support in making sense of those experiences in a grounded, non-judgmental way. I also work well with students who feel alone or disconnected, especially when that feeling traces back to childhood experiences, family dynamics, or early trauma. These students may struggle with anxiety, sadness, shame, or a sense that they don’t quite belong. Therapy with me is a space to slow down, feel understood, and explore what’s coming up without pressure to have it all figured out.
