Therapists for college students near New York University
Do you feel overwhelmed by anxiety, stress, or big life changes? Many students come to me feeling stuck, pressured to have everything figured out, or caught between growing independence and complicated family or social dynamics. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to navigate it by yourself. I’m Kaylie, a Licensed Master Social Worker, and I help people manage anxiety, depression, identity concerns, and everyday stress that starts to feel like “too much.” I focus on getting to know you—what you care about, what feels hard, and what you want to change. Together, we’ll use practical tools and strategies (like problem-solving skills, coping techniques, and supportive conversations) to help you feel more grounded and confident. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe, understood, and never judged. Therapy doesn’t have to feel intimidating. You don’t need to have the perfect words or a clear plan. You just need a place to start. If you’re ready, I’m here to support you.

Jiayi “Shao” Shao is a bilingual therapist with an international and multicultural background. She pursued her Masters in Mental Health Counseling at Columbia University. Having grown up in China, she believes in Tao, or the Way — the healing power that emerges as one learns to navigate the continuous flow of life with space and fluidity. She believes that fostering awareness and delving into various feelings, emotions, and sensations can assist individuals in resolving blockages that hinder a sense of freedom, ease, and deeper meaning in life. Passionate about the process of healing, growth, and rediscovery of self, Shao celebrates the courage of each and every individual choosing their own path. Acknowledging her intersectional identities as a person of color and a queer individual, Shao is passionate about working with the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. She utilizes an eclectic approach to therapy which includes psychodynamic, Internal Family Systems, and EMDR techniques. Her background as a Zen Buddhist and experience in improvisation theatre inspire a uniquely creative use of imagery, somatic work, metaphoric associations, and dream interpretation. She strives to create a warm, empathic, and reflective space that welcomes deeper questions, aiding individuals in reconnecting with their most authentic selves.
Often, we can get stuck in our daily grind of rise, rinse, repeat, daydreaming about what could be different, and yet feel paralyzed by uncertainty. “Feel the fear and do it anyway” might fall flat because how does one get to the point where they can identify what they are feeling is fear and trust in themselves and others to hold space for them along that journey? In my therapeutic practice, I offer a compassionate, culturally sensitive, and judgment-free space informed by humor, creativity, and collaboration. My goal is to support those who may be experiencing concerns including, but not limited to, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and burnout. With a special focus on trauma-informed care and disordered eating, I provide a secure and comfortable environment where clients can explore and heal from past and present challenges. By blending person-centered, cognitive-behavioral, and psychodynamic techniques, we will craft a personalized strategy to address what is holding you back from reaching your authentic self.

Hi I'm Anna. I'm experienced in therapy/coaching with Neurodivergent young adults and folks living with Disability/chronic illness. I know how feeling misunderstood and other-ed can be deeply challenging, especially if you navigate the world with a unique set of experiences or marginalized experiences. I know what it's like to navigate the world from that position, especially with regards to Disability, Neurodivergence, Queer identity, and complex trauma. I honor my clients' lived experiences and cultural contexts that they come from, tailor my approach and range of therapeutic tools to fit you and your needs, not the other way around. My clinical practice involves an eclectic range of tools and modalities tailored to your needs with a person-centered, trauma competent, Neurodivergent-Affirming, and feminist foundation - along with DBT, Internal Family Systems, AEDP, attachment-based, relational, mindfulness/meditation, and more. I provide psychotherapy, life & communication coaching. I work to empower folks through self-compassion, clarity, tangible tools to encourage growth, and affirming care that meets you where you are with an understanding of how marginalization and identity intersect with our wellbeing and bodyminds. I am a Covid-informed and conscious provider. Set up a free consult call with me through my link to get started.
You scroll through social media—past the highlights of trips, engagement announcements, and large friends/family gatherings—that familiar ache settles in your chest. You’ve been hurt, and it’s affected your ability to form healthy connections where you feel safe, seen, heard, and validated. Opening up—being vulnerable—feels like a struggle, and you know it’s keeping you stuck and alone. It’s not that you haven’t tried. You’ve been open, set boundaries, and “put yourself out there”. You’ve invested time, energy, and effort into making your relationships work. Yet you're feeling stuck, frustrated, wondering where I'm going wrong. I work with individuals in New York who want to break old relationship patterns and build connections that actually feel good. My warm, collaborative style blends solution-focused, psychodynamic, and person-centered approaches. I offer affirming care for LGBTQIA+ clients and those in non-traditional relationships. Healing from relationship pain takes courage and care—and you don’t have to do it alone. Whether you’re single, dating, in a situationship, or exploring polyamory, we’ll move forward with curiosity, not judgment. If you’re ready to stop repeating patterns and start building relationships that feel safe and supportive, I’d be honored to work with you.
Many of the clients I work best with are international students navigating life far from home—often balancing academic pressure, cultural adjustment, and questions of identity and belonging, all while holding emotions they may not feel safe expressing elsewhere. They may appear high-functioning on the outside, yet feel disconnected, lonely, or uncertain inside. Our work together offers a space to slow down, make sense of what they’re carrying, and reconnect with parts of themselves that have been silenced or split across languages, cultures, or expectations.
Hello! I assist BIPOC LGBTQ+ adults (18-40) to overcome anxiety, depression, shame, body image, grief, and trauma, among other challenges. While using various therapeutic techniques, I especially draw from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy to meet your unique needs and goals. Together, we will explore how your past, present, and social environment impact your mental health. I have extensive experience working with BIPOC folx, those with intersectional identities, people from diverse sexual and gender experiences, sex workers, kink/fetish, BDSM, and poly/ENM communities. I would love the opportunity to assist you on your mental health journey in reaching your desired goals. Sliding scale fee available.
Dr. Marguerat Degaard is a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Her academic journey started in Switzerland with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Geneva. Wanting to combine her passion for dance and the art of therapy, she came to the US and obtained a Master’s degree in Dance/Movement Therapy in 1986 from Hunter College, NYC. She worked as a Dance Therapist for 14 years, developing, implementing and supervising creative art therapies programs. In 2005 Dr. Marguerat Degaard received her PhD from Adelphi University. Since then she worked in hospital settings adding teaching and training to her work as a clinician. Throughout the years, she continued to receive education and training in different areas of interest. She has been in private practice part time and full time since 2015. Her approach is integrative and flexible greatly influenced and informed by her artistic background. Her many years of work in the mental health field has taught her profound humility in the face of the deepest layers of humanity. She views psychotherapy as an in-depth collaborative and creative process which expands and frees self-expressions allowing untold stories to be told, contradictions to be bridged, and emotions to be touched or re-touched towards richer and healthier self-understanding and life experiences. She offers psychotherapeutic services in English and French. Her method will encourage and mobilize what she calls the 3 Cs in her patients, i.e. courage, curiosity and creativity. She will support the courage it takes to embark on the therapeutic journey, she will foster a deep sense of curiosity in one’s experiences that help shape one’s humanity through self-reflection and self-exploration work, and the use of creativity to allow new spaces to open and be expanded.
Are you feeling anxious or stuck? Do you want to make changes but feel unmotivated or uncertain of how to make it happen? I am an LCSW working in direct practice for over 10 years throughout New York City, and I've had the opportunity to help people grappling with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, relationships, sexuality, career changes, and many other major life issues. My client base includes people moving through major life transitions such as adjusting to college life, exploring a new identity, or recovering from the loss of a relationship.
The college students I work best with are thoughtful, curious, and trying hard, even if it doesn’t always feel that way. Many are dealing with anxiety, perfectionism, or OCD and feel overwhelmed by the pressure to succeed, figure things out quickly, or keep it all together. Some struggle with focus, motivation, or routines, even though they care deeply about their goals. A lot of my clients tell me they feel stuck in their heads, constantly overthinking, procrastinating, or second-guessing themselves. They’re tired of feeling like they’re falling behind and want someone who truly understands and can offer tools that actually help. In our work, we make space for what’s difficult while building real strategies to help you feel more grounded, capable, and clear about what you want.
Whether you are navigating a life transition, seeking to work through long-term issues and persistent patterns, or feeling stuck, I am here to support you in developing better ways of relating to yourself and others. I specialize in working with adults experiencing difficulties such as depression and anxiety, interpersonal challenges, professional issues, and identity and self-esteem concerns. I work primarily from a psychoanalytic/psychodynamic orientation and take an open-ended, exploratory approach. I believe this can help you develop insight about yourself and your experiences, sometimes in ways that have been outside your awareness, leading to greater self-acceptance and meaningful growth and change. I look forward to helping you become more curious about yourself and explore your inner life, and can consult with you to see if we would be a good fit.

We offer affirming psychotherapy and sex therapy for individuals, couples, multiple-partner relationships, and poly and leather families. We are experts in alternative sexualities, specializing in working with adults in the kink/BDSM, polyamorous/non-monogamous, trans/gender-nonconforming/non-binary, LGBQIA+, and sex work communities. We work with those who live openly and out; and those who have more conservative and private lifestyles. We use a variety of therapeutic approaches, including holistic, person-centered, collaborative, empowerment-focused, trauma-informed, IFS, DBT, and EMDR. We welcome people of every ability, age, gender, national origin, race/ethnicity, religious affiliation, and sexual orientation, and we cultivate space for conversations that de/reconstruct whiteness, and cultivate positive racial and intersectional identities. People seek therapy for many reasons, including: a deeper understanding of identity or sexuality; difficulty adjusting to relationship difficulties or traumatic experiences; anxiety and/or depression; sexual functioning issues; compulsive thoughts or behavior; and/or changes in relationship structure or power dynamic. Most people decide to work with my practice because of my specialized training and experience, or because they feel more comfortable speaking to a therapist with first-hand knowledge of alternative identities and lifestyles.
At McGarril Mental Health Counseling, we believe that therapy works best when it's honest, well-informed, and deeply human. We founded this practice because we saw too many people struggling to find therapists who were both clinically excellent and genuinely present. Too often, mental health care feels either coldly clinical or lacks the evidence-based foundation that creates lasting change. We work with clients 18 and over, dealing with depression, anxiety, substance use, relationship issues, grief, eating disorders, and much more. We use EMDR, DBT, IFS, ACT, and CBT approaches. We're committed to offering something different: relational and trauma-informed therapy that combines rigorous training with authentic connection. We show up fully—bringing our expertise, our continued learning, and our humanity to every session.
