Therapists for college students near Philadelphia, PA
The Center for Advanced Psychotherapy (CAP Clinic), is part of Bellefield Outpatient Behavioral Health Services, UPMC in Oakland. Most cases referred will likely be seen by a trainee under supervision of a psychologist, psychiatrist, or licensed mental health counselor through the CAP clinic. Trainees are either advanced students earning their doctorate in clinical psychology (PhD or PsyD) or medical residents (MDs) who are specializing in psychiatry and receiving specialized psychotherapy training. Video or audio taping of sessions is required in the CAP Clinic for supervision and training purposes. Patients participating in weekly psychotherapy can also be seen for med management services by a Psychiatrist or Psychiatry Resident, if appropriate. Lauren Bylsma, PhD has expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approaches for mood, anxiety, traumatic stress (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders in adults and adolescents. Other providers in our clinic (Holly Swartz, MD and Kelly Wells, MSW, LCSW) have expertise in interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) for unipolar and bipolar depression in adults. Some patients may not be a good fit for our clinic, including those with active alcohol or substance abuse issues, active psychosis, uncontrolled mania, high risk for suicide, homicidality or history of aggression, eating disorders, or those not appropriate for an outpatient level of care. Session fees are based on your insurance co-pays but it may be possible to see a trainee who does not bill insurance (i.e., no session fees), depending on trainee availability. We currently have availability with psychology trainees who do not bill (no charge for sessions, any insurance or no insurance is ok). Med management visits are billed to insurance. We currently offer both in-person and Telehealth services.
I strive to encourage a self-driven sense of wellness with all individuals I work with. Since 2015 I have worked with individuals coming from an array of backgrounds, challenges, circumstances, and stories. Having worked with professionals from diverse specialties (psychological, psychiatric, medical, occupational, nursing) I like to take a collaborative and eclectic approach to mental health and therapy. Regardless of a person's background it is possible to achieve relief from depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, stress, and relational challenges.

I offer primarily neuropsychological assessment to provide diagnostic clarity and to help you better understand how your brain functions. This may help you better understand your own unique way of learning, interacting with others, and handling life's challenges. With that enhanced understanding, you can more effectively take steps to improve your daily functioning and live a better and more fulfilling life. I do offer therapy for individuals dealing primarily with the challenges of life stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Taking the first step on your healing journey can be difficult. Whether you're seeking therapy to process trauma, navigate difficult relationships, or to overcome life’s daily challenges, I'm happy you're here exploring your options and taking that first step. Throughout my career, I've worked with clients experiencing a wide range of these challenges including sexual and physical abuse, family conflict, relationship struggles, intimacy challenges, identity work, anxiety and depression. I am certified in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT) and trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). While I have several years of training in these modalities, I hold a strong belief that treatment should be individualized for each client. I believe you have the capacity to find healing, but you shouldn't have to navigate it alone. My goal is to partner with you on your journey no matter the challenge you are facing. Finding a therapist can feel exhausting so when you're ready, I hope you will reach out with any questions to see if I'm the therapist for you.

Clients often say "I wish I had started with you sooner." I specialize in life transitions, anxiety, depression, relationships, and grief and loss. I am informed in several therapeutic modalities and hold a level II certification in Attachment Based Family Therapy. Former college athlete.
I work with individuals 18 years old and above who are struggling with depression or anxiety. I can support you to change behaviors to feel better, change patterns of thinking to improve your feelings, develop closer and more satisfying relationships, and much more. I use approaches that have been shown to be effective such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. As a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, I conducted research specific to the mental health of teenagers. I also have extensive experience working with LGBT individuals. Our first meeting would be a chance for me to really understand why you want therapy, for us to develop goals together (Note: My clients often begin developing goals by thinking about "If we are successful working together in therapy, how would you and your life be different?"), and for you to determine if therapy with me is a "good fit."

Welcome! I’m so glad you're here. We may not know each other yet, but I want you to know that I believe in your strength. Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside many people on their healing journeys—especially women just like you, who are navigating the ups and downs of relationships, healing from trauma, and learning how to trust themselves again. Through my work, I’ve learned one important thing: healing doesn’t just mean surviving—it means thriving. With the right support, tools, and a safe space to be vulnerable, you can break through the limits of your past and create a life that feels authentic, empowered, and full of possibility. I know college life can feel like a whirlwind—juggling friendships, relationships, academics, and personal growth all at once. It’s a lot. But you don’t have to do it alone. I’m here to support you as you navigate these challenges, whether that’s working through past trauma, navigating complicated relationships, or simply learning to love and trust yourself again. Your journey is uniquely yours, and it’s possible to turn your pain into power. I deeply believe that true transformation happens when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable. That’s when we open up the possibility for real change and growth. If you're ready to explore what that could look like for you, I’m here to guide you. Let’s walk this path together. If you're feeling stuck, unsure, or just need someone to talk to, reach out. Let's talk about how we can work together to help you feel stronger, more confident, and more connected to your true self.
